The Recoil Check Valve was developed in the Glenfield hydraulics laboratory from experimental data. An elaborate piping system was installed in which severe forward and return flow phenomena could be reproduced in check valves under actual flow conditions. Analysis of the test data provided a clear guide to the determination of the essential requirements for non-slam closure for the development of the Recoil Check Valve. As a result, the Glenfield Recoil Check Valve can reduce water hammer pressures caused by check valve slamming up to 97 percent.

The Glenfield Recoil check valve does not need springs, levers, dashpots, or other extraneous equipment to prevent slam. Every device necessary for non-slam operation has been included in the design of the valve, from the shape of the valve body to the design of the door. This means that there is no need for any unnecessary, high maintenance equipment to provide effective non-slam closure. The simple and elegant design of the valve itself is all that is required to prevent slamming.

Recoil check valves are for use in high head or short length multi-pump or single-pump water or sewage systems in which rapid flow reversal occurs. Recoil check valves are effectively used in pumping stations that have one of more of the following conditions: p>

• High Branch Velocities
• Automatic Stopping and Starting
• Delivery into a vertical rising main
• Incorporation of a pneumatic accumulator
