Fixed-Cone Valves are used to pass a controlled amount of water downstream with no damage to the immediate surroundings. These valves are ideally suited for power projects, flood control structures, irrigation facilities, and for continuous discharge flow control. Fixed-cone valves are also an effective method of aeration.
The Glenfield Fixed-Cone valve was developed from extensive laboratory testing and field investigations; it is designed to operate vibration free over its full range of opening. The valve body uses five shaped ribs to hold the downstream cone. Lab investigations indicate that an odd number of ribs effectively dampen vibrations that are found in other fixed cone designs. The outlet cone insures that discharge is in the form of a hollow conically expanding jet, which is ideal for energy dissipation as the water is spread over a rapidly increasing surface area, thus permitting effective atmospheric cushioning. If containment of the jet is desired, a hood can be installed. The valve body is constructed from ductile iron. Cast ductile-iron has proven to be a more durable material than conventional welded steel designs. The cylindrical sleeve is constructed of fabricated stainless steel with bronze guides for low maintenance in a harsh environment.
The Free Discharge valve uses resilient downstream and upstream seals to ensure a droptight shutoff.
The Free Discharge Valve is typically operated by manual, electric, or hydraulic operators. Manual and electric operators use a bevel gear to rotate the drive shafts that run along the side of the valve, opening and closing the gate sleeve. Hydraulic operators use two hydraulic cylinders to open and close the gate sleeve.
